Can you visit Keck Observatory at night?
We have been up for sunset and stargazing in the past on organised tours. In the section “Visiting” of the homepage of the W.M. Keck Observatory I see that there is a Visitor’s Gallery in the observatory on top of Mauna Kea, which is open Mondays to Fridays from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Can you go up Mauna Kea right now?
While the summit is open to the public, the summit telescope facilities are CLOSED to visitors. Visitors will frequently ascend the summit during the day or to watch the sunset, then return to the Maunakea Visitor Information Station to view the stars.
Is Mauna Kea open for stargazing?
Yes! At 9,200ft (2,800m) elevation the visitor center is a great place for stargazing, especially if you visit during the free weekly stargazing events (currently unavailable due to COVID restrictions). Is it hard to drive up Maunakea?
The road to the summit, with asphalt and gravel sections, is called Mauna Kea Access Road. It’s a 14,7-mile narrow road built in 1964. It can be dangerous, particularly in bad weather. This is one of the toughest drives in the world.
Is it bad to visit Maunakea?
You’ll witness the amazing biodiversity of Hawaii on Maunakea, one of the only places on earth where you can travel from sea level to nearly 14,000 feet in a two-hour drive. For this reason and for safety concerns, visitors are discouraged from traveling beyond the Maunakea Visitor Information Station (VIS).
Can I drive a rental car to Maunakea?
One of the highest lakes on the planet, Lake Waiau, just 750 ft below the summit. You are welcome to drive your vehicle on the Mauna Kea Summit Rd to the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station. None of our major rental car companies allows their vehicles, Jeeps included, beyond the visitors center.
