Can I Sorn a car with a private plate?
While the car you’re taking the private plate from doesn’t need to have an MOT, it must be able to move under its own power, and must have been taxed or been SORN’d for the last five years. Once the private number plate is transferred, your car will automatically be reassigned its original registration number.
Do you need logbook for private plate?
If you are transferring number plates to a new car, you will need the vehicle’s log book (V5C) handy. If you apply online, the personalised number will be removed immediately (if your vehicle does not need an inspection). As soon as you’ve applied to remove your plate, use the reference number you get after you apply.

How long does it take to remove private plate?
If you need to perform the removal by post, then you need to allow around 2 weeks for your request to be processed, and then the 4 to 6 weeks for the replacement V5C to arrive. If you have no interest in keeping the registration, then you don’t have to do anything and can let the number plate go with the vehicle.
Can I put a private plate on a car without MoT?
No. A car must have a valid (current) MoT before a personalised number plate can be transferred to it. You will need to obtain a valid MoT certificate for your vehicle.
Can I transfer private plate with green slip?
DVLA V62 form You can still apply to transfer private number plates by filling in this form and sending it with the V5C/2 little green slip. Where do I send my V62 form?
The v62 form has to be sent to the following address : DVLA Swansea, SA99 1DD. Note that you will have to pay a £25 application fee along your sending, that is payable by cheque or postal order addressed to “DVLA Swansea”.
Why can’t I remove my private plate online?
The usual reason is because the car is going to be sold and you don’t want lose the rights to display your personalised plate. If you get a message saying ‘this registration number cannot be retained online’ call the telephone number displayed on screen and speak to a member of the the DVLA online support team.
