What should my anti-skating be set to?
Set the anti-skating control to zero. Next turn the counterweight on the back of the arm so the arm balances without falling either up or down. While holding the weight stationary, rotate the adjustment dial on the counterweight until it reads zero at the top.
Is anti-skate necessary?
YES – you DO need anti-skating. It is just simple physics. Setting it where it provides equal force per groove wall for where music spends 80-90% of its time is simply correct – 30-40% average modulation level antiskating adjustment makes FAR more sense, both from the standpoint of listening, and wear.
What is anti-skate control?
Anti-skate is there to maintain equal force on both the inner and outer sides of the stylus to keep it balanced within a typical groove. Anti-skate control counteracts this by, in effect, pulling it out a tad.
Can anti-skate damage records?
When you have too much anti-skate on your turntable, it puts excess pressure on your record and may damage the record. It also prevents the record from moving properly, which causes distortions in the sound. You also minimize uneven stylus wear because it is not pushing to one side of the record groove.
What happens if anti-skate is too high?
When there is too much anti-skating force, it will cause too much pressure to be applied to the right or outer groove walls, causing a higher level of distortion on the L channel. Our theory of optimizing anti-skating is to equalize the level of distortions between the right and the left channel.
Is tracking force the same as anti-skate?
In all cases over 1.5 grams tracking force, I’ve found that anti-skate should be at least half a gram less that the tracking force. Using those settings has helped produce the best channel balance, and helped to reduce inner groove distortion, and helped to improve tracking of warps.
Can anti-skate cause distortion?
Why does my turntable not have anti skate?
Most turntables include this features. Record players that don’t have an anti-skate adjust device may have an internal mechanism to counteract the skating force. The fact that a record player doesn’t come with an anti-skate knob doesn’t imply that the turntable will skate. It only means that the anti-skate force cannot be manually adjusted.
Where does the needle go on an anti skate?
In this case, you place the needle in the middle of the record. If the needle maintains its place during playback, then the anti-skate is setup properly. If the needle skates towards either the center or the edge of the record, your anti-skate needs to be adjusted.
How do you slow down an anti skate?
You MAY have to add some small metal washers to the far arm of the anti-skate mechanism to get the arm to slow down – to have it not run inwards quickly. It will take some patience.
What kind of record do you use for anti skate?
Some people use a blank vinyl record. This is a record without grooves, it has a flat surface with no music. In this case, you place the needle in the middle of the record. If the needle maintains its place during playback, then the anti-skate is setup properly.
