Why was Cromford Mill so important?
The world’s first successful water-powered cotton mill paved the way for the factories of the British Industrial Revolution. The creation of the Cromford Mill, the first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill, was more than just an important step in making cotton production easier.

Entry to the site is free, but there is a charge for guided tours, the Arkwright Experience &Visitor Centre, and carparking. Cromford Mill also offers a wide-ranging retail experience in attractive surroundings.

Open to all members of the public. Come and enjoy a peaceful journey along the canal, from Cromford Wharf to High Peak Junction, introduced by a booming announcement from the FCC President, Brian Blessed. Because of the sensitive nature of the canal, numbers are strictly controlled.

Richard Arkwright lived at Rock House, Mill Road in Cromford, a three-storey brick building constructed in 1776. He began to build Willersley Castle, a much larger mansion in the late 1780s, but he died in 1792 before it was completed.
