Does military get housing allowance?
Basic allowance for housing, or BAH BAH is intended to cover the cost of housing and is available to service members stationed in the U.S. who don’t live in government-owned housing. This allowance is based on average housing costs, your rank and whether or not you have dependents.
What is military basic housing allowance?
BAH is an allowance to offset the cost of housing when you do not receive government-provided housing. Your BAH depends upon your location, pay grade and whether you have dependents. BAH rates are set by surveying the cost of rental properties in each geographic location.
Do you get OHA if you live on base?
Active duty members who are stationed overseas outside the U.S. and are authorized to live off base earn this special housing allowance since they do not receive a Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) while stationed overseas.
How is military BAH determined?
The allowance is set based on geographic duty location, pay grade, and dependent status. The Department of Defense and the Services designed the BAH program to provide accurate housing allowances based on the market price of rental housing rather than member-reported rents.
Do both military members get BAH?
In general, dual military couples without dependents each receive single BAH. Therefore, two military members not married to each other and living together could get BAH with dependents based on their status. If they get married one of them will lose the BAH with dependents, it will revert to single BAH.
How do you qualify for military housing?
Military families get first dibs on any available housing, so if you are living there and your lease comes up for renewal, you may have to move to make room for an active-duty family. To qualify, you must pay for a credit and background check for each adult living in the home and show proof of employment and income.
How is Army BAH determined?
How does overseas BAH work?
Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) is a tax-free monthly allowance paid to service members stationed OCONUS and authorized to live in private housing. You are paid OHA in the exact amount of your rent, plus an amount determined by DoD to cover the utility and recurring maintenance expenses for their location.
