How do you plant forage oats PlotSpike?
Forage Oats can be planted in August and September for grazing during bow season….How to use:
- Plant seeds from 1/4 inch to 1-1/2 inches deep.
- Adequate moisture is required for proper germination.
- Lime according to soil test and fertilize periodically with high nitrogen fertilizer.
- Plant 50 lbs. per 1/2 acre.
Can you plant whole oats from Tractor Supply?
I planted 100 lbs of TSC whole oats a month ago. We have not had any rain to germinate yet. The QDMA guys plant the TSC whole oats with great success.
Can you graze cattle on oats?
Oats can be grazed when 6 to 8 inches tall. An oat crop will provide about 50 cow days of grazing per acre in dry climates and approximately 100 days in climates with more moisture. Grazing should be managed to remove the forage before becoming too stemmy, or in about 60 days.

What is the difference between oats and forage oats?
Yes the forage is taller and more leaves. I tired forage oats with peas and the oats seemed to shade the peas too much and the peas did better with grain oats. I suppose if i had cut back on the amount of forage oats i planted with the peas it might have made a yield difference.
