What does Magna ported mean?
Mag-na-port offers a unique system of porting semi-automatics by using a trapezoidal port through the barrel and an oversized expansion vent through the slide to allow maximum dissipation without fouling. This process offers an alternative to shooters not wanting additonal weight or length from add on compensators.
How is Magna porting done?
Mag-na-porting is accomplished with Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), a surgically precise method of removing metal. Dielectric oil is flooded over the area of the barrel that is to be “cut,” and an electrode. It is the electron flow which does actual “machining” of the trapezoidal ports.
Does porting help recoil?
A ported barrel doesn’t technically reduce recoil. Newton’s third law dictates that recoil’s full energy has to go somewhere. That said, it may reduce the amount of recoil a shooter perceives, making shooting more comfortable in the process.
What does porting do for a pistol?
Porting typically involves precision-drilled ports or holes in the forward top part of the barrel and slide on pistols. These holes divert a portion of the gases expelled prior to the departure of the projectile in a direction that reduces the tendency of the firearm to rise.
Does ported barrel reduce velocity?
Porting decreases the velocity the most on a short barrel. This is because the gas pressure is higher and it bleeds off. The longer the barrel, the more the gas pressure drops. So on longer barrels the difference in velocity will be less.
What are the benefits of a ported barrel?
Pros. Having the barrel ported has a wonderful application for those shooters seeking faster follow-up shots on target. The ports on the barrel are for reducing recoil by allowing the expanding gases to sort of thrust the end of the pistol downward. Great for competition shooters!
Does a ported barrel reduce velocity?
A ported barrel of the same length as a non-ported will usually lose some velocity. Simple physics: you bleed off some of the gas that drives the bullet before it’s through driving it, and it will go slower. The effects are pretty variable, though. The bigger the ports, the greater the velocity loss.
Is a ported barrel worth it?
What do you put in a port barrel?
Add 1ΒΌ cups of good Brandy or Cognac, 1 cup of red wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon etc.) and fill the rest of the barrel with any cheap Tawny Port (about 1 gallon + 1 regular bottle). You can also add a small nip of whisky to the blend.
