Students are eligible to enroll in YCP if 16-18 years old. School systems have two options in determining how to enroll students in YCP. Monitoring and reporting information is also described for each option.
How long is the YCP program?
17½ months
The program lasts for 17½ months. The first 5½ months are part of the quasi-military Residential Phase. The last 12 months are part of the Post-Residential Phase. Most participants will earn their GED or a high school diploma by the end of their Residential Phase.

Youth Challenge is an alternative program which offers youth, who have dropped out of school or are not progressing, the opportunity to change their future.

The Discovery ChalleNGe Academy is a military-style alternative educational program. Students cannot be sentenced or court ordered to attend or is there any military obligation at all. Only 6% of our graduates ever join the Military. The decision to attend should be made by the applicant.
What happens in ycp?
Students looking for a way to succeed outside of a traditional school setting learn self discipline, leadership, and responsibility while working to obtain a high school equivalency diploma. During this phase, students attend school, receive individual counseling and are supervised 24 hours per day.
