What happens in the caliper when you brake?
A caliper is part of the disc brake system, the type most cars have in their front brakes. The brake caliper houses your car’s brake pads and pistons. Its job is to slow the car’s wheels by creating friction with the brake rotors.
What causes a rattle on the brake pads?
Brake Pad Rattle. Brake pad rattle can also lead to spongy brakes as the pads bounce around and knock the caliper pistons back, thereby requiring more pedal travel to snug the pads back up close to the disc. Brake pad rattle can also be caused by lack or the appropriate claw clip on the pad reverse.
What to do when your brake rotor rattles?
Check your hub bearing by jacking up the vehicle and rocking the tire from side to side and up and down. Another thing to check, is the caliper bolts, and the sliders for the caliper. Pull the wheel off and rock the caliper from side to side to see if there is any play.
What causes brake pads to stick in caliper?
Dirt or rust on those slide ways will prevent the shims from seating properly and could cause the pads to stick in the caliper. This will cause brake noise or brake squeal and cause the pads to overheat the brake rotor.
What should I do if I see a gap in my brake pad?
If you do see a gap, then you have a problem with your brakes. The way brakes are designed, the caliper should always be in contact with the pad, and the pad should never be any further than 1/8th of an inch (approx) from the disc. Shims are not part of this equation… you should never have to shim a brake assembly to achieve the correct fit.
