How does a heater box work?
It works, in essence, by diverting coolant from the rest of the car’s cooling system. When you turn on the heat inside the car, a valve is opened so hot coolant can flow to the heater core (on some cars), or a door is opened to direct air through the already hot heater core.
What is inside a heater core?
A heater core is a small radiator located under the dashboard of the vehicle, and it consists of conductive aluminium or brass tubing with cooling fins to increase surface area. Hot coolant passing through the heater core gives off heat before returning to the engine cooling circuit.
Does the heater core have anything to do with the AC?
The heater core will not cause the A/C to not blow cold. If your A/C is working properly with the correct amount of refrigerant, then you may have a temperature blend door not working and staying on heat mode.
What does a heater control valve do?
The heater control valve (sometimes called the hot water valve) is used to control the rate at which coolant flows through the heater core. The valve is located on the heater inlet hose. Manually operated systems may use a cable, a vacuum motor or an electric solenoid to operate the valve.
Why does a heater core leak?
Coolant/antifreeze contains corrosion inhibitors that coat the surfaces inside the cooling system, including the heater core. When the corrosion inhibitors are depleted, the cooling system can become corroded, filled with contaminants and may even start to leak.
What are two signs that the heater core has failed?
First, the heater core could be malfunctioning and, as such, the defrosters aren’t working. Second, the core could be blowing fog/smoke into your vehicle’s cabin. Both are bad signs and need to be checked into right away.
What causes the heater core to go bad?
How does a heater core go bad? There are multiple reasons a car’s heater core could not be working properly. One reason could be due to clogging, as the coolant could become contaminated if it’s not regularly flushed out. Another reason for a bad heater core could be because of a leak somewhere in the system.
