When did Honda start using the VTEC system?
Since its introduction in the late 1980s, VTEC has been used in many of Honda’s best performance cars including the NSX, Integra Type R, S2000, and Civic Type R. But the way VTEC goes about…
How much power does a Honda Civic VTEC have?
Reading 140 mph on a dial means that the car is doing 135 if not less. I highly doubt that. 135 mph for this car is already optimistic. Power for the DOHC VTEC is 160hp with a 0-100 speed of 7,2 or 7,3. But no way 8,4, thats for the 125hp SOHC VTEC engine.
What kind of engine does a Honda Civic have?
The most mass production engine is the D16A. This engine is a ubiquitous engine for Civic model as well as the smaller D15B engine. The D16 engine is very similar to the D15. The D16 shares the same cylinder bore, but it has a more significant stroke to reach more displacement.
What to know about tuning the Honda D16 engine?
Tuning the Honda D16 and best D16 performance parts. A good solid engine used in quite a few Civic and Integra models over the years, it makes a good project basis to work from. With lower compression adding forced induction makes a big difference.

How many valve heads does a Honda D16a have?
The engine has only 16 valve head versions, but they can be SOHC and DOHC. Also, the manufacturer produced the VTEC engines and non-VTEC engines. Like in the D15, there are camshafts driven by timing belt. The engine doesn’t have hydraulic lifters. The adjustment is required every 25,000 miles (40,000 km).
What makes the VTEC kick in engine sound?
As engine speeds rise, a piston inside the rockers is pressurized with oil, locking all three cams together to increase valve lift. This is where that signature “VTEC kicking in” sound comes from.
What to do if your VTEC is not working?
Clearing the DTC, disconnecting the VTEC oil pressure switch and using a jumper wire to short the signal wire to ground and keeping your RPM below 2700 when driving would prevent VTEC from engaging and you could operate your vehicle. This ASSUMES that you actually do have engine oil pressure to keep from grenading your engine.
Why does my Honda VTEC go into fuel cut mode?
If the pressure switch signal is not logical for the commanded state of the control solenoid, a DTC will set and the PCM will go into a ‘fuel-cut’ mode limiting engine rpm and performance. The PCM simply doesn’t ‘know’ what the state of the intake valves are, so you end up with the symptoms you describe.
What to do if your Honda Civic VTC actuator is bad?
1. Remove the cam chain. 2. Loosen the rocker arm adjusting screws. 3. Remove the camshaft holder. 4. Remove the intake camshaft. 5. Check that the variable valve timing control (VTC) actuator is locked by turning the VTC actuator clockwise and counterclockwise. If the VTC actuator is not locked, replace the VTC actuator.”

Why does my Honda Civic VTC make clacking noise?
Its possible we are speaking about a different noise, however once i changed the vtc gear, the clacking went away and the noise around 3K-4K went away as well. I have had to replace several already, hopefully the new cam set up will yield better results for me.
