Why do exhaust valves need to be adjusted on Honda Odyssey?
I just finished the timing belt service on my 2003 Honda Odyssey with 213,000 miles and got to thinking about valve adjustment. The van has never had the valves adjusted. My concern is the Honda exhaust valves tend to go tight and tight valves can cause them to burn up.
Is it necessary to adjust Honda engine valve?
The engine might appreciate the attention. If they’re not noisy, leave them alone. Honda says only adjust if they’re noisy. If you adjust them incorrectly, you run the risk of damaging them. That can be VERY expensive labor wise to fix. If you’re not practiced at valve adjustments, I do not recommend starting with a V6.
When to change timing belt on Honda Odyssey?
In my 1999-2002 Honda Service Manual it says that on 2002 engines the valves need to be adjusted every 105K miles. Being in a place that the climate determines when I can work on my vehicles I am changing the timing belt and adjusting the valves on my 2002 Ody at a little under 200k. And I have to say the timing belt looked brand new.
How often do you need a valve adjustment?
A valve adjustment is needed on your vehicle every 15,000 or 30,000 miles. The valves on your vehicle are adjustable and do loose adjustment over time. If the valves are too far out of adjustment, the engine will not breath correctly which will result in rough idle, stalling, low power, bad gas mileage and even engine misfires.
Can you adjust the valve on a Honda Odyssey?
Valve adjustment is typically within a pretty small range and I doubt very much you could misadjust it far enough to cause it to hit the piston. It would have to be fully open when off the cam lobe (meaning it is open all the time). Probably wouldn’t run very well especially if you managed to adjust all the valves this way.

When to do a valve clearance check on a Honda?
Valve clearance check/adjustment is recommended at 176,000 km (110,000 miles) in the service manual. There is no noise, and the engine has never stalled, never had a rough idle or had any trouble starting the first time.
