May 6th is Wishbone Day, an international awareness day for Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), better known as “brittle bones.” The idea for Wishbone Day was birthed at the Australian OI Conference, held in 2008.
What is OI Awareness Week?
National OI Awareness Week is a week dedicated to raising awareness for OI and sharing your Unbreakable Spirit®. OI Awareness Week is scheduled around Wishbone Day (May 6), the international OI Awareness Day.
Is OI life threatening?
The most severe forms of osteogenesis imperfecta, particularly type II, can include an abnormally small, fragile rib cage and underdeveloped lungs. Infants with these abnormalities may have life-threatening problems with breathing and can die shortly after birth.
Is OI a disability?
A child who has been diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Type II will qualify for disability, since OI Type II is listed as one of the conditions that qualify for a compassionate allowance.

What is OI type 2?
OI type II is the most severe type of osteogenesis imperfecta. Affected infants often experience life-threatening complications at birth or shortly after. Infants with OI type II have low birth weight, abnormally short arms and legs and blue sclera.
How do wishbones work?
The wishbone, technically known as the furcula, is a V-shaped bone found at the base of the neck in birds, and even some dinosaurs. According to tradition, if two people grab hold of opposite ends of the bone and pull until it breaks, the one who ends up with the bigger piece will get his or her wish.
