What size carbides do I need?
What length carbide do I need? If you are a trail rider: running 96 studs or less, use a 4.5-6″ carbide; if you are running more than 96 studs, we recommend an 8-9″ carbide. If you are a Mountain/Powder rider: A minimal carbide will be sufficient: use 4″-6″ carbide.
How do I know what carbides to get?
To get a wear bar that will last longer, you will want to find one with a larger diameter host bar. The degree that the carbide is cut is also important to the longevity. A 60 degree cut will give you more bite when the carbides are new, but because more of the weight is focused on the point, it will wear out faster.
How long should my carbides be?
For safety reasons 6″ turning carbides should be the minimum length, for these sleds. I know OEM’s put on 3 to 4 inches of turning carbides on stock, but that is not enough bite to help in hairy situations. Every season more and more snowmobilers are riding 8″ carbides on 144″ and longer tracks without studs.

One of the most noticeable traits of a damaged carbide runner is darting or drifting. If you suddenly start experiencing this during your riding season, roll your sled on its side and check your runners. If your runners are good then you could have bent a suspension component or need a ski alignment.
What does darting mean snowmobile?
Darting occurs when the sled’s steering is responding to the direction of even small ruts in the trail rather than your steering input. As the sled encounters new ruts, it’s shifted in an unpredictable side-to-side manner.
When should you replace carbides on a snowmobile?
When the carbide inserts are flush with the host bar (or torn out) it’s time to replace. I’ve used bergstrom triple point skegs for the last 4 years and they outlast the others by a long shot.
