Why is Bristol Zoo shutting down?
Bristol Zoo Gardens will remain open until late 2022 and visitors will not see an immediate change on site while plans are developed further. The site is closing due to the financial impact of Covid-19, declining visitors and the Gardens having made a loss four of the past six years.
How long do you spend at Bristol Zoo?
You could easily spend a whole day here if you visit every part of the zoo and engage the children in all the activities and interactive displays. However, it’s a relatively small zoo, so you could do everything in 4-5 hours if you’re short on time or have kids who bound through each area fairly quickly!

Since we opened to the public in 1836, we have helped save over 175 species from extinction through breeding programmes, established over 30 field conservation and research projects all over the world, showed 40 million school-age children the value of nature and given more than 90 million visitors a great day out.

Bristol zoo is a lovely day out for the family. It’s not massive but for me it’s got everything you need (penguins!). The talks are entertaining and there are some good spots to stop and have a picnic. A year long pass works out value for money if you go regularly.
Can you take a picnic to Bristol Zoo?
Q: Are we allowed to bring in food to have a picnic? A: Yes, if you wish to bring a picnic we have a number of picnic tables and benches around the Zoo, and lawns that you can use. Please note we are unable to provide storage facilities, and barbeques are not permitted inside the Zoo.
