Which wick is best for beeswax candles?
cotton square-braided wick
It turns out the wick is one of the most important considerations while making beeswax candles. I talked to a few beeswax candle makers, and all agreed that a cotton square-braided wick was best for this type of candle.
Do beeswax candles need special wicks?
Yes. All of our beeswax candles use 100% cotton wick. Our square braided cotton wicking is designed specifically for the use in beeswax candles. They utilize a ” bleaching ” process to whiten the wicking and remove impurities through the use of a salt solution resulting in a cleaner burning wicking.

How do you pick a wick for a beeswax candle?
WICK SIZE MATTERS Candle-makers choose very large wicks for several reasons: the beeswax isn’t filtered as good as it could be and needs a bigger wick to accommodate the impurities in the wax; or there is a lot of added wax colorant and/or fragrance that the wick will have to work hard to pull up.
Are hemp wicks good for beeswax candles?
No flare-ups: The even layer of beeswax ensures that the flame will burn uniformly and melt your candle wax in smooth, even layers. The thick hemp wick provides a larger flame that burns slower – sure to work with a variety of candle sizes and proven to make your candles last longer.
Why do you add coconut oil to beeswax candles?
Adding some coconut oil to your beeswax should help the candle burn more consistently and avoid tunneling, but technically you can also make a 100% beeswax candle as well. Basically, your candle will never burn further out from the center than it does on your first burn.
What scents go well with beeswax?
Even with the addition of coconut oil, though, I’ve found that only very strong scents (peppermint, lemongrass, vetiver etc.) do well in DIY beeswax candles. Fortunately, most beeswax smells faintly of honey, which is delightful all by itself or when blended with essential oils.
What makes a good pillar candle?
Since pillar candles are freestanding, they should be made from a harder wax; paraffin wax is widely available and budget-friendly, though if you prefer a more eco-friendly option, long-burning beeswax and clean-burning soy or coconut waxes are also good choices. Pillar candles are sometimes (but not always) scented.
Can I use hemp twine as a candle wick?
You can learn how to coat hemp for making candle wicks. Hemp string is already stiff and dry, so you won’t need to treat it the way you would if you were making wicks out of cotton string. Use a basic technique for coating the hemp so it will burn slowly, the way a candle wick should.
