How do Ofcom deal with complaints?
We assess each complaint carefully to see if our rules may have been broken. If we decide the complaint doesn’t raise issues warranting further investigation, we’ll close the complaint and publish a record of this in our Broadcast and On Demand Bulletin, which is published every fortnight.

Ofcom is the regulator for the communications services that we use and rely on each day. We make sure people get the best from their broadband, home phone and mobile services, as well as keeping an eye on TV and radio.

Media regulator Ofcom received a huge number in complaints over the last year – the highest since it started in 2002. The UK broadcasting watchdog received 142,660 complaints between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2021, a 410% rise on the previous 12 months’ total of 34,545.

How do Ofcom investigate?
Every time Ofcom receives a complaint from a viewer or listener, we assess it under the Broadcasting Code to see if it needs further investigation. The Code sets standards for television and radio shows and broadcasters have to follow these rules.
How many complaints do Ofcom investigate?
During the 2019 year, we assessed 221 broadcast standards complaints about BBC programmes which had completed the BBC First process.
