What is the BiliTool?
BiliTool is designed to help clinicians assess the risks toward the development of hyperbilirubinemia or “jaundice” in newborns over 35 weeks gestational age. Required values include the age of the child in hours (between 12-146 hours) and the total bilirubin in either US (mg/dl) or SI (µmol/L) units.
What is bhutani chart?
The Bhutani Nomogram is used to determine the level of risk based on the Infant’s hours of age and serum bilirubin result. Predischarge bilirubin in high risk zone. Jaundice observed in the first 24 hours of life. Blood group incompatibility with positive direct Coomb’s test or other hemolytic disease.
What is a Bilimeter?
There are devices available to measure the bilirubin level non-invasively (without needing to do a blood test). These are called Bilimeters and they measure the degree of jaundice of the skin by pressing a sensor on the baby’s forehead. Bilimeters can be used on babies of all racial backgrounds and all colours.
How do you calculate bilirubin levels?
Conc. of bilirubin (serum sample/test) = OD(test)/OD(standard) *conc. of standard*100 mg/dl Page 2 Calculation is followed by result and interpretation on the basis on Serum total bilirubin, conjugated (direct) bilirubin and unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin.
When should I start phototherapy?
Phototherapy should be instituted when the total serum bilirubin level is at or above 15 mg per dL (257 mol per L) in infants 25 to 48 hours old, 18 mg per dL (308 mol per L) in infants 49 to 72 hours old, and 20 mg per dL (342 mol per L) in infants older than 72 hours.
How is kernicterus treated?
Treatment for kernicterus involves using an exchange transfusion as used in the treatment of newborn jaundice. If significant brain damage occurs before treatment, a child can develop serious and permanent problems, such as: cerebral palsy (a condition that affects movement and co-ordination)
When should phototherapy be started?
Is 14 a high bilirubin level?
Typically, bilirubin levels fall somewhere between 0.3 and 1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Anything above 1.2 mg/dL is usually considered high. The condition of having high bilirubin levels is called hyperbilirubinemia.
How does a Bilirubinometer work?
High correlation between cutaneous bilirubin and TSB form the basis of Transcutaneous Bilirubinometry. These meters work by directing light into the skin of the neonate and measuring the intensity of specific wavelength that is returned. These are analyzed by a microprocessor to generate a serum bilirubin value.
How do you use a Bilimeter?
Connect sensor head to Bili-meter and set range switch to 0.1 – 19.9. Place the Bili-meter’s sensor head on the infant’s abdomen (if supine) or back (if prone) and aim toward the center of the phototherapy light. Press the “READ” button and record reading in microwatts per square centimeter per nanometer.
What is bilirubin normal range?
A normal level is: Direct (also called conjugated) bilirubin: less than 0.3 mg/dL (less than 5.1 µmol/L) Total bilirubin: 0.1 to 1.2 mg/dL (1.71 to 20.5 µmol/L)
