Does magnesium affect alkalinity?
Magnesium helps maintain calcium and alkalinity levels in a reef tank. If levels are too low, calcium will combine with alkalinity to create calcium carbonate in the water column.
How does calcium affect alkalinity?
Conversely, if alkalinity gets too high, calcium levels will tend to fall as calcium precipitates out of solution in the form of insoluble calcium carbonate, also causing pH fluctuations. Ideally, calcium levels should be between 400 and 450 ppm, while the alkalinity should be between 2.5-3.5 meq/L (7-10 dKH).
Does calcium raise alkalinity?
If, for example, you add too much of a calcium supplement, you will drive down alkalinity as you get precipitation of calcium carbonate in the tank. Likewise, adding too much of an alkalinity supplement can result in reduction of calcium. Consequently, trying to correct one problem can cause another.
Is calcium and alkalinity the same?
Even if all the alkalinity in normal seawater was removed by precipitating calcium carbonate, the calcium would drop by only about 50 ppm. For this reason, alkalinity varies much more rapidly and extensively, on a percentage basis, than does calcium when both are over- or under-dosed, relative to their demand.
How do you balance calcium and alkalinity?
The best way to correct this problem is small frequent water changes with well balanced saltwater. If you need to boost calcium, you can use a supplement like BRS Bulk Pharma Calcium Chloride or E.S.V. Calcium Chloride. If you need to boost alkalinity, try BRS Bulk Pharma Alkalinity Supplements.
Does calcium hypochlorite raise calcium hardness?
Regardless of physical form, neither the powder or tablet versions of calcium hypochlorite contain pool stabilizer (cyanuric acid) to protect against the sun, but instead contain calcium which raises your pools calcium hardness level over time.
Does calcium raise pH in aquarium?
Many aspects of aquarium water chemistry interact with each other. For example, the addition of calcium increases the pH, alkalinity and hardness of water. Calcium is one of the minerals that determines hardness. Meanwhile, pH represents how acidic or basic a water sample is — and calcium has basic properties.
Does calcium affect pH?
Because the circulating calcium subfractions (protein-bound, anion-bound and ionized) are in equilibrium, the amount in each subfraction changes if the equilibrium is affected. The equilibrium is most affected by pH, because binding of calcium to protein is particularly pH sensitive.
Does calcium or alkalinity first?
The last two, calcium and alkalinity can be done in either order, but we do recommend testing and dosing calcium before alkalinity since the calcium solution is much less likely to precipitate. It is a good practice to monitor your aquariums salinity and pH while you are dosing 2-part additives.
