Where does the Madigan Line start?
Old Andado Station
The Madigan Line runs from north east of Old Andado Station then east across to Adria Downs Station before turning south down to the QAA Line. From there it is east to Birdsville via Big Red. CAMPING: Most of the Madigan Camps have cleared space for camping.

How long does it take to cross the Madigan line?
The extremely interesting story can be read in Madigan’s book: “Crossing the Dead Heart”. Madigan took 35 days to make his west/east crossing; we had estimated ours would take 12-14 days. We would travel some 800 kilometres and traverse over 600 sand dunes.

Where is the Hay River track?
The Hay River Track map above outlines our journey, it runs for 350km from the Plenty Highway near Jervois Station to Poeppels Corner in the Simpson Desert. Jervois Station is approximately 300km from Alice Springs, and Poeppels Corner is about 170km from Birdsville.

Are there any camps on the Madigan Line?
Adria Downs permission covers Camps 17 to 22 , camps 23 and 24 are prohibited (see image my track log) The Madigan Transit permits are issued with conditions that exclusions visiting camps 3, 4 and 5 . From memory,You are not to leave the track any more than 50 meters .
Is it easy to drive the Madigan Line?

Any recovery from out here is time-consuming and very expensive. While the route was easy to follow on our trip, dry windy conditions may cover the tracks, making good navigation essential.

You will need to carry additional fuel for this Tour, as it’s along way between fuel fill ups. V8 Landcruisers – 220 litres, smaller Diesel vehicles -170 litres, Petrol vehicles – 300 litres (these figures include your main fuel tank & sub tanks – if you have them) Minimum of three vehicles required to run the tour.
