What is a furring strip for siding?
Furring strips are long thin pieces of material usually made of wood or metal. They are used to make a backing surface for the siding to attach to. These strips create the drainage plane that is essential for rainscreen siding to be effective in the way that it was designed for.
Can Hardie board be installed on studs?
HardiePlank® lap siding can be installed over braced wood or steel studs, 20 gauge (33 mils) minimum to 16 gauge (54 mils) maximum, spaced a maximum of 24 in o.c. or directly to minimum 7/16 in thick OSB sheathing.
How do you attach Hardie panel?
James Hardie products can be hand nailed or fastened with a pneumatic tool. Pneumatic fastening is highly recommended. Set air pressure so that the fastener is driven snug with the surface of the siding. A flush mount attachment on the pneumatic tool is recommended.
Are furring strips necessary?
Whether it’s the ceiling or the walls, furring strips are essential to ensuring that you’ll always get a flat and smooth surface when the project is complete. When applying furring strips to your walls, they will have to be directly screwed or nailed into the wood or concrete wall.
Can you use furring strips outside?
For outside… Generally the rule of thumb for outside is that it should be either redwood or pressure treated.. That said, pressure treated is a chemically treated wood. Also, it generally isn’t supposed to be finished (painted or stained) for about a year.
Does Hardie board need strapping?
Even though James Hardie does not require a rainscreen in most cases, it can still be a relatively inexpensive way to improve the long-term health and performance of your structure. Particularly with HardiePanel, we always recommend at least a drainable housewrap as a weather barrier.
What size furring strips should I use?
This site recommends using a Yellow #4 load on strips 3/4″ thick, or Green #3 for 1/4″ – 1/2″. You could also use concrete screws. Pre-drill holes in furring strip and wall (about every 24″). Clean holes in walls well (with shop-vac).
What does a furring strip look like?
If you’re unfamiliar with what a furring strip is, it’s best described as a long, slender strip that’s constructed from either wood or metal. In most cases, furring strips are 1” x 2” or 1” x 3” in size and can be applied both horizontally or vertically.

What kind of siding is Hardie panel made of?
HardiePanel® vertical siding is a Grade II, Type A, fiber-cement flat sheet as defined by ASTM C 1186. The panels are manufactured by the Hatschek process and cured by high pressure steam autoclaving.

Can you use hardiepanel vertical siding on fascias?
• HardiePanel vertical siding may be installed on vertical wall applications only. • DO NOT use HardiePanel vertical siding in Fascia or Trim applications. • The designer and/or architect shall take into consideration the coefficient of thermal expansion and moisture movement of the product in their design.
