When does the battery light come on while driving?

Week 2: Battery light came on while driving. Monitored it, but no worries because everything seemed to be fine and light frequently went back off. Week 3: Battery light came on, then other lights came on, then car died on side of highway. Had it towed to repair shop. Replaced alternator and battery, was on my way.
