Why is the dash light dim on my Monte Carlo SS?
One of the more common complaints from 4th Generation Monte Carlo SS owners is the dim gauge cluster. If you’re like me, you have to squint to see your fuel level or other gauge readings at night. The problem is the result of a combination of a few different factors. The lamps used to illuminate the gauges are not the brightest to begin with.
What kind of lamp is used for gauge cluster?
The stock lamp type used in the gauge cluster for illumination is type 168 which has a rating of 3 candle power. There is one alternative for brighter lamps: Sylvania type 2825 lamps which are rated at 5 candle power. (Alternate part numbers: Wagner 17177, Philips 12961, GE W5W) We recommend using the type 2825 lamps in this write-up.
What to do if your dash light does not work?
#Test the dashboard light bulbs. If the fuses are working properly, check for a blown bulb in the dashboard. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, disconnect the battery while working on the dash, remove the faceplate covering your vehicle’s dashboard gauge panel. Remove the screws holding the plate on. Carefully remove the faceplate.

9 people found this helpful. Check tail light fuse. they may be out. When taillights go out, dash lights go with so you will know, and not be driving around without taillights and not know. The way it works, is in daylight, the dash lights are on all the time and are not adjustable, (unless you turn on headlights manually).

Tail lights and dash lights are connected through the tail light (and/or brake light) fuse. When the dashboard goes dark you know you are driving without tail lights.
