Where can I find a speed sensor wire?
Discussion in ‘ 1st Gen. Tacomas (1995-2004) ‘ started by whizfish, May 18, 2019 . [Solved. See followup post below. The pics in this post do NOT show the correct wire. -Dan] I’m trying to find a speed sensor wire to connect to a new stereo receiver I’m installing.
How does a speed sensor work on a car?
There are 2 wires connected to the VSS, a black one and a white one. Both wires connect the VSS to your vehicle to ground the sensor and transmit information about you’re vehicle’s speed. Unplug the harness so you can take out the sensor.
How can I repair my reverse parking sensor?
You will find that the best way to do this is to simply take out the sensors and clean them with a soft cloth or rag. There may be dirt and debris trapped on them or they may be oily or dusty. Make sure that you have it completely cleaned off before you put it back in.
How can I test my speed sensor with a multimeter?
You can then connect it to a multimeter and set the multimeter to the AC setting. Connect the VSS to a power drill so you can simulate the rotation of the vehicle’s transmission and read the multimeter to see if the voltage increases as the speed increases to check if the sensor is working properly.
Can you test a 3 wire speed sensor?
Testing a 3 wire (Hall Effect) speed sensor is nearly as simple. Since the 3 wire sensors are externally powered, you will need to have a power source of some kind if you are testing outside of the vehicle.
Where is the speed sensor wire for CarPlay?
(Apparently Kenwood holds the wireless CarPlay functionality hostage until you get both this and the parking brake switch hooked up.) Crutchfield tech support describes it as “green/orange speed sensor wire, pin #21 of 28 pin plug at ECM behind glove box”.
How does the speed sensor work on a stereo?
You can intercept the wire coming out of the cluster. If the stereo has a navigation system it uses the speed signal to calculate your speed more accurately and quickly than just using GPS. It automatically calibrates the speed sensor signal to speed based on GPS calculated speed, then uses the speed sensor signal after that.

How does the speed sensor work on a Toyota?
On at least some modrls Toyota likes to take the analog speed sensor signal fed to the speedometer and convert it (in the speedometer) to digital (square wave) to be sent to the computer. You can intercept the wire coming out of the cluster.
What to do if your speed sensor is bad?
If there is no change in the reading, the sensor is bad and should be replaced. (Courtesy: autozone.com) Hall Effect sensor: Using the repair information for your vehicle, determine which pin on the sensor connector is the signal return wire. Using your multimeter on the DC voltage setting, back probe the sensor wire.
What happens when the WSS sensor reads zero mph?
If the circuit suddenly goes open or shows a jump in resistance, you’ve found the fault. If one of the WSS PIDs reads zero mph and the other three are reading vehicle speed, the fault is a bad sensor or a fault in the sensor wiring circuit (keep reading for information on how to check the sensor itself).
What does it mean when your speed sensor says p0500?
If the reading does match but you still have a P0500 code, you likely have an intermittent problem. If your vehicle fails the test listed above, it’s time to determine what part of the VSS circuit is to blame. Testing the sensor varies slightly, depending on which type of sensor your vehicle uses.
