  Sometimes the Temp gauge reads ridiculously high, sometimes the Boost gauge does the same, and sometimes (less frequently) the Fuel gauge reads high. Removing and replacing fuse number 4 sorts the problem, but it returns within about a week.
  
  What happens to the gas gauge when the circuit is shorted?
  
  If the internal circuit is faulty, the gas gauge may only function in one section, such as between HALF and FULL or between EMPTY and HALF. If the internal circuits are shorted, they may peg to FULL or EMPTY. If the circuit is open, the gas gauge will likely sit at EMPTY and never move.

  GM cars from the 1930s to the 1960s operate on a 30 ohm scale. At zero ohms in the sender, the float is on the bottom of the tank and the gauge should read empty. At 30 ohms, the float is at the top of its travel and the gauge should read full.
