Is the cigarette lighter in a car always on?
To use the cigarette lighter in any car even older cars you have always had to turn the key to the accessory position for it to be able to work. They have never had constant power to them even when turned off because doing so causes unnecessary drain on the battery when accessories are not being used.

Short story: the 12 volt power outlets in my car are always on. I’d like them to only be active when the ignition is on or the car is in accessory mode. Anything I can easily do? I don’t have any electronics experience to make something but I’m up for tearing apart the dash or console to do this.

Where do I plug in the 12V outlet?
Plug it into any fuse location that has power while key off – moving the fuse to the main add-a-fuse slot. Plenty of them in there will be live full time.

When does the 12V pin always have power?
The other pins will have power when the corresponding light is used or the brake pedal is pressed. If you want to have constant 12V power to the trailer, even when the truck’s ignition is off, you can simply manually run your own hot lead.
