Can you open coolant reservoir when hot?
Never remove the cap from a radiator or coolant recovery system reservoir when the engine is hot. Adding cold water to a hot engine can crack the engine block.
Why does my Honda Civic overflow radiator?
The reason was not enough coolant in the system, filled up radiator and all OK. Then it happened again and there is coolant in the overflow tank, but pull the radiator cap and no fluid under cap. Fill radiator and all OK, but it kept happening. I replaced the OEM radiator cap with a new “Slant” brand for an ’03 Civic. No better, no worse.
What to do if you overfilled coolant reservoir in Honda Civic?
Get a block tester. You get those on the loan a tool program at o Reilly, or autozone. Test before adding coolant. Buy a new cap, then burp the system. Hope it ends there. If not, move to the next test.
Why does coolant come out of the overflow tube?
While this may seem to be a minor issue, it can lead to dire consequences. In normal circumstances, the coolant gets ousted out from the reservoir overflow tube, the moment the engine starts warming up. This leakage is visible and may result from bad reservoir cap. Go through maintenance tips for consequences of the overfilled coolant reservoir.
What happens when coolant is taken off of radiator?
lurkin… As the engine heats up and the cooling system builds pressure, the cap releases pressure (coolant) into the reservoir. When the engine cools down again the coolant is pulled back into the system. If a cooling system is working properly there should always be coolant filled to the top of the radiator when the cap is taken off.

Why is my Honda Civic not cooling properly?
In cases like that the coolant is no longer cooled mostly by airflow through the radiator. When you stop the temperature spikes and the thermostatically controlled electric cooling fan starts…and runs until temps. are brought below the lower limit of the sensor that controls on/off of that fan.
Why is the water boiling out in my Honda Civic?
If that is the problem, the reason the water is boiling out is because due to the head gasket blown, coolant is seeping into the cylinders and that is getting burned off through the exhaust, but in return as the cylinders move up and down, you will get air forced back into the cooling system as a result of the cylinder movement.
What should I do if my coolant reservoir overflows?
In older automobiles, the radiator was made of copper and aluminum. In more modern automobiles, the radiator contains a lot of plastic. The plastic radiator are light weight, but tend to ware out faster. Replacing the radiator is recommended over applying a patch if the leak is found.
