How do you size a heli coil?
Drill out the damaged threads using the drill supplied in the kit. Drill to a sufficient depth to accommodate the insert length and the bolt or screw being used. Tap the hole using the Heli-Coil tap supplied in the kit. Check the size on the shank of the tap to be sure it is the right size.

Is a Heli Coil strong?
Most aluminum aerospace parts that have threads will call for Helicoils. You are very correct with that statement and hence Eddies comment on it being stronger. The original threads are cut into the aluminum case. A properly installed steel helicoil is far stronger.
What if helicoil is too long?
As you can imagine, if the hole is too long you can use two inserts, one at the top and another at the bottom, without nothing in between. The helicoil is harder than the aluminium threads, so chances are you will be good enough with that. And that’s it! A new threaded hole for the original M6 bolts….
Do helicoils come in different lengths?
As long as the Helicoil length is about 1 1/2 times the bolt diameter you will be fine. They do come in different lengths. Max torque for a given bolt diameter can be achieved at about 1 1/2 times the bolt diameter without thread damage.

I’ve also occasionally had to shorten a helicoil to put a thread into a shallow casing and I’m not sure how I’d do that with a time-sert. You cannot shorten a TIME-SERT. Can you HeliCoil a thru hole?
For a through hole you can run the tap all the way through for a full thread. The last three pictures above show the drilling and tapping and the new oversize thread. Drop the HeliCoil into the side of the coil guide, and insert the threaded driver through the barrel of the guide into the HeliCoil.
