A DMX splitter allows you to send your signal in different directions, or to send your signal to more lights. DMX signal can only run through about 32 lights before it starts to have problems.

The OPTO-Splitter allows a single DMX-512 line to be translated to a star configuration. The unit has 5 separate DMX-512 Outputs and optically isolates every Output from each other as well as the Input for ground fault isolation. The unit also provides a DMX Thru connection for insertion in the middle of a DMX chain.
Can you splice DMX cable?
DMX cable works from point to point, and what’s more, requires each one of those points to be terminated properly as “in” and “out”. You cannot splice DMX wires together to continue a DMX run. They should be properly terminated and grounded.

Can you connect multiple DMX cables together?
Yup… we do it too! For our current install for a middle school spring musical, we have an assortment of 5′, 10′, 15′ & 50′ DMX cables keeping everything strung together. Should be no problem.
What cable should I use for DMX?
Network cable (Cat5, 5e or 6 cable) may be used to carry DMX in an installation; however special consideration must be given to shielding and termination. Under no circumstances should solid core cable like Cat5 be terminated into a screw down connector. ETC recommends the use of Belden 9729 for DMX installation.
Is 3-pin DMX same as XLR?
Though DMX cables and XLR cables are often both three-pin cables and look the same, they should not be used interchangeably, especially along longer cable runs. DMX cables and XLR cables are engineered to handle different types of information at different impedance.
Can I use XLR for DMX?
Yes, it is possible (but not advised) to use XLR cables for DMX connections. DMX has a higher impedance (110 ohms) than XLR (75 ohms). An XLR cable can transmit a DMX signal, but not very well. An XLR cable used for this is likely to cause flickering lights or experience signal loss if it even works at all.
