How do you give a hyoscine injection?
Adults: One ampoule (20 mg) intramuscularly or intravenously, repeated after half an hour if necessary. Intravenous injection should be performed ‘slowly’ (in rare cases a marked drop in blood pressure and even shock may be produced by Buscopan). When used in endoscopy this dose may need to be repeated more frequently.
What is the use of hyoscine?
Hyoscine (also known as scopolamine) is used to treat cramps (spasms) of the stomach, intestines, kidneys, and bladder. It helps to relieve discomfort caused by conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, gallstones, kidney stones, and overactive bladder.
What is the mechanism of action of hyoscine?
Its anticholinergic action exerts a smooth-muscle relaxing/spasmolytic effect. Blockade of the muscarinic receptors in the GI tract is the basis for its use in the treatment of abdominal pain secondary to cramping. Hyoscine butylbromide also binds to nicotinic receptors, which induces a ganglion-blocking effect.
Is hyoscine an IM or IV?
Adult: As hyoscine hydrobromide: 0.2 mg as a single dose via IM or SC inj (may also be given via IV inj if required).
How often can hyoscine be given?
They can be taken by adults and children aged 12 years or older. The usual dose is 1 tablet (300 micrograms), 3 times a day.
Is buscopan a muscle relaxant?
Buscopan is a powerful smooth muscle relaxant, effective when given by mouth or by injection. In the recommended dosages, Buscopan relieves smooth muscle spasm rapidly. Undesirable ‘atropine-like’ side effects such as blurred vision, palpitation or dry mouth are rare.
Can buscopan be taken with omeprazole?
No interactions were found between Isopto Hyoscine and omeprazole. This does not necessarily mean no interactions exist. Always consult your healthcare provider.
How fast does hyoscine work?
Hyoscine stops the spasms in the smooth muscle, allowing it to relax. This reduces the painful spasms and cramps. Buscopan IBS relief tablets work very quickly and can relieve painful cramps within about 15 minutes of taking the tablets.
Is hyoscine and hyoscyamine the same?
Hyoscyamine can be extracted from plants of the family Solanaceae, notably Datura stramonium. As hyoscyamine is a direct precursor in the plant biosynthesis of hyoscine, it is produced via the same metabolic pathway.
