The reason why is because of the many dangers including deaths that have happened from people trying to do that. There is no road or path that leads down there and you would literally be risking your life to scale down there.

McWay Falls is on the west side of Highway 1, across from most of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. You can pull into the park to see more beauty (like Canyon Falls in the creek above McWay Falls). If you can’t stay long, find a parking space along the highway and walk 0.3 miles down McWay Waterfall Trail.

Christopher McWay homesteaded the canyon in the late 1870s and eventually McWay’s Saddle Rock Ranch was sold in the 1920s to Lathrop Brown and his wife, Helen Hooper Brown, who built two houses at Waterfall Overlook.

Julia’s great-niece Esther Julia Pfeiffer and her husband Hans Ewoldsen were caretakers of the Saddle Rock Ranch for many years.
