What is JPlag?
JPlag is a system that finds pairs of similar programs among a given set of programs. It has successfully been used in practice to detect plagiarisms among student Java exercise submissions. The execution time is less than one minute for submissions of 100 programs of several hundred lines each.
How does JPlag work?
JPlag works by converting each program into a stream of canonical tokens and then trying to cover one such token string by substrings taken from the other (string tiling). JPlag is by far not the first system built for finding plagiarisms.
How do I download JPlag?
Download and Installation
- Download or clone the code from this repository.
- Run mvn clean install from the root of the repository to install all submodules. You will find the JARs in the respective target directories.
- Inside the jplag directory run mvn clean generate-sources package .
How do you check if your code is plagiarized?
To detect plagiarized code, the most popular tool is the MOSS system. (If you already know you want to use MOSS this quarter, skip to “Getting Started” below). Using MOSS involves packaging up students’ solutions, submitting them for automated examination, and reviewing the results.

The base code is a special kind of submission. It is the template that all other submissions are based on. JPlag will ignore any match between two submissions that is also part of the base code. Like any other submission, the base code has to be a single file or directory in the root directory.
Where can I use jplag on my computer?
JPlag can either be used via the CLI or directly via its Java API. Note that the legacy CLI is varying slightly.
Can a jplag ignore a match between two submissions?

Can a jplag scan more than one source code file?
They have to be direct children of the root directory and can either be single files or directories. JPlag will read submission directories recursively, so they can contain multiple (nested) source code files. If you want JPlag to scan only one specific subdirectory of a submission for source code files (e.g. src ), you can pass the -S option:
