Why does my Honda Element not get hot air?

Sounds like a clogged heater core or bad thermostat. We have had this problem with our 03 E since new. Periodically the heater will not give hot air. Our dealer has worked on it repeatedly, and can’t seem to fix it. Based upon their performance, I decided to troubleshoot the thing myself.

The heater should heat the cabin really well when the temp gauge needle is just below the middle of the gauge and when the temp gauge needle is just below the middle (as stated in the OP), that’s pretty much normal operating temp.
