Why does my Honda Rincon not shift gears?
So the gear of the sub-transmission are turning when i want to shift it in drive or reverse. If the shift cable is out of adjustment it wouldn’t fully engage the gear and will rattle when you try to put it in gear. Which I think is what you are describing.

I can shift it with a plier at the engine when i disconnect the shifting cable. I can easily put it in drive or reverse when engine is off. But then it won’t start. It is possible to put it in drive. With a little run-up i can easily put it in drive without rattling. But without run-up it rattles and i have to apply force.

Sometimes the shift buttons wouldn’t work until you cycled the key. The shift motor is trying to shift, but can’t shift. Honda’s are very sensitive like the previous message said. Run Amsoil 0w40 in it and wait for it to warm up 10mins or so before riding. These engines are cold natured, and you cannot just hop in and ride, the oil runs the entire transmission if it’s thick and cold it’s going to act like junk. Yikes.

I hoisted the rearend off the groung and ran through the gears at just above idle. In second you can see resistance or a slowing of the tire speed in a rhythm or patern. There no sound of gear noise or anything from inside the case so I’m starting to feel like it’s a hydraulic issue as in a valve or sensor. Rather than a gear or clutch problem…
