Commissioners are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. By law, no more than three Commissioners can represent the same political party, and at least four votes are required for any official Commission action. This structure was created to encourage nonpartisan decisions.

Why was FEC established?
The Federal Election Commission was established in 1975 to administer and enforce the Federal Election Campaign Act. That statute limits the sources and amounts of contributions used to finance federal elections and requires public disclosure of the funds raised and spent.

If you are running in a different district in the same state for the same office, check “Amended.” On Lines 4-6, enter the candidate’s party affiliation, office sought, state and district, if applicable.
How long does it take to change FEC identification number?
If the candidate redesignates an existing committee, the committee need only amend its Statement of Organization (Form 1) within 10 days to reflect any new information (for example, a change in the committee’s name or address). The redesignated committee will retain its original FEC identification number.
