What is Baloo Scout training?

BALOO stands for Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. It’s the introductory training Cub Scout leaders should complete before taking Cub Scouts on an overnight camping trip. Recent updates to this two-part course make the content more impactful, useful and convenient.

What happens at Baloo training?

The training will include instruction on camp setup, cooking, sanitation, camping equipment selection, knife safety, fire safety, and using wood tools safely. The food for the students to cook on Saturday (lunch and dinner) and the means to cook it will be provided.

What is Iols training?

The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) course builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training and Varsity Coach Position-Specific Training, and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors.

All arrangements — sleeping, cooking, and program — should be geared to Cub Scout-age boys. Things to bring: Yourself and your camping gear, including eating utensils.

IOLS is one of two training courses needed for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to qualify as trained leaders. The other required course is Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training (SPST).
