Do you get to choose your language at DLI?
A: DLIFLC does not determine which service-members come to the institute or what language they will be assigned to study. Normally, students are given one of their top three choices of language. However, often the assigned language can depend on the needs of the Services.
What languages can you learn at DLI?
DLI’s language guidelines
- Category I languages, 26-week courses, include Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.
- Category II, 35 weeks, includes German and Indonesian.
- Category III, 48 weeks, includes Dari, Persian Farsi, Russian, Uzbek, Hindi, Urdu, Hebrew, Thai, Serbian Croatian, Tagalog, Turkish, Sorani and Kurmanji.
Who can attend the Defense Language Institute?
To attend DLIFLC one must be a member of the Armed Forces or be sponsored by a government agency. DLIFLC students are taught by approximately 1,900 highly educated instructors, 95 percent of whom are native speakers of the languages they teach.
How long is DLI for French?
36 weeks
Following the extension of the French course by 10 weeks several years ago, the length of the course today is 36 weeks, putting it in a category II length course.
How much is foreign language proficiency pay?
The monthly FLPB rate is based on proficiency and the language payment list (Army Soldiers can receive from $100 and up to $500 maximum for one language depending on which language and score). For those who qualify for FLPB in multiple languages, the total monthly FLPB amount for multiple languages CANNOT exceed $1000.

Do you get paid for knowing Spanish in the military?
