Why is my radio just static?
If you only hear the static when listening to the radio, and not when listening to CDs or any auxiliary audio sources, then the problem is either with the antenna, the tuner, or some external source of interference. Check if moving the antenna wire removes static. Check if moving other wires removes the static.
Why does my radio only work when I touch the antenna?
The signal quality increases because your body is an antenna. You increase the radio antenna length and hence it’s “gain” when you touch it. This effect doesn’t happen at all frequencies and the increase in gain is fairly small. It can make a difference if the signal you are trying to listen to is weak.
Why does radio static go away when you touch the dial?
Static is a routine annoyance for those of us who still listen to terrestrial radio. You get up to adjust the dial and, just as you put your hand on the knob or button, the reception clears up. You sit back down and, a few seconds later, the sound crackles again.
