When to add a quart of oil to a car?
Now, if you need to add a quart of oil at or before 3000 miles—because the oil level on the dipstick is at the Low mark—your engine is consuming too much oil. The engine may have an external or internal oil leak. If the engine has used over half a quart but less than a quart, you may have a small leak.

How often should I use oil in my car?
There is a certain level of oil consumption in which an engine will have under normal conditions. For modern engines, they should consume less than 1/2 quart of oil every 5,000 miles of driving. Most newer cars consume much less.
How often should you check your oil level?
Monitor your oil levels at least every 1000 miles and more often is better. Once the oil is down over a quart the remaining oil circulates more rapidly and runs hotter and burns off faster. When your oil is 1/2 way between the marks on the dipstick add 1/3 to 1/2 quart until it reads on the full mark.

Is it true that oil only leaks when engine is idling?
However, you could be wrong on one or both counts. It is possible that oil is only leaking when the engine is pushed to higher RPMS, and that it isn’t leaking much oil when the engine is idling–and in a case like that, you wouldn’t be likely to see evidence of leakage on the ground.
What to do if you have blue smoke coming from your engine?
First of all, remove the valve cover and do necessary cleaning to rid your engine of debris. Despite various type of engines , the first thing which can cause blue smoke is surely the engine. Clean the drain back holes carefully and recheck and reassemble them. After the mending job, wait for 2 or 4 more days for the remaining oils to clean away.
What to do when you see smoke coming from your car exhaust?
The first thing you need to do is identify when the smoke comes from your car’s exhaust. If it comes from the exhaust when accelerating, that might indicate a different problem than if you see smoke when your car is stationary. Once you’ve worked out when the smoke occurs, next you need to try and determine what kind of smoke it is.
Why do I have smoke coming out of my engine?
It will be caused by your car’s coolant leaking into the engine. This can be caused by a failed head gasket (the seal between the engine block and the head that sits on top), which could be a pricey repair, but not as expensive as needing to repair a cracked engine block or cylinder head.
Why does my car smoke after 30k miles?
Going about 30k miles without an oil change will ruin anything. Maybe this smoke is due to heavy sludging in the cylinder head (s) which is allowing oil to pool and seep past the valve guides instead of draining back into the crankcase. I used to teach the Boy Scouts: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Why does my car engine smoke when I change the oil?
This could be caused by valve stem seals, worn rings, a plugged PCV valve, not changing the oil for extended periods, too high of an oil level or transmission fluid being sucked into the intake manifold from a bad vacuum modulator. When the valve cover is removed, there’s so much sludge built up under the valve covers that it appears like mud.
Is it normal to lose 2 quarts between oil changes?
Your car is actually just burning the oil as it is supposed to do, however it might just not be quite so visible to you just yet. If what this example told us is true, and they lost 2 1/2 quarts between oil changes, that is a big red flag for a car under 60,000 miles on the odometer. However it is not something that regular maintenance can’t fix.
Why does my car engine have blue smoke coming out of it?

What should I do if my engine consumes 2 quarts in 1000 miles?
If the engine consumes more than say 2 quarts in 1000 miles (or whatever their limit is), then they may suggest to do something about it. If less than that, they’ll say just keep it topped off between changes.
How many quarts of oil in 6000 miles?
Burned 5 quarts of oil in 6000 miles. Does this sound right to you? No warning light of any kind. How many times did you check the oil in those 6000 miles??? Your warning should have come when you checked the oil level.

How often should I use a quart of oil?
Jeff Smith: You’re right, a quart every 500 miles is way too much, especially for a relatively new engine. At first, I was in agreement with your friends who suggested valve guide seals, but if you don’t see clouds of blue smoke from the exhaust on deceleration, then likely there is another situation.
