What is the key inside my fob for?
Mechanical Key: Owners of cars with push-button start systems might not be aware that a mechanical key resides inside the key fob. This is so that owners can still unlock the driver’s door in cases when the car’s battery or the key fob’s battery runs out of juice, or the fob malfunctions.
Will car lock if key fob is inside?
No. If the key fob is near the car the driver’s door will be unlocked. Furthermore, if the car has push button start, it will start up if the fob is inside. Don’t do this.

As far as leaving the key in the gas filler compartment, that will not work on my vehicle. Once the doors are LOCKED, the gas filler compartment LOCKS as well. The doors on the vehicle have to be UNLOCKED in order for the gas filler compartment door to open.
