Why does my diesel misfire at 1300 rpm?

At mid range rev (1300-1800 rpm) in any gear the car will intermitently misfire/ cutout, but if you drop a gear and drive her hard it doesnt do it. Or drive hard through that rev band. Only when your crusing along she arses about.

At first the suspect problem was the connector for the MAF unit, as the engine had cut to default mode once or twice and been restored to normal by fiddling with the connector.

I do appreciate a normal cold IDI diesel engine is noisy but this is +30% extra. It ‘seems’ to be coming from the engine rather than the pump – as if a pump setting/problem is causing the knock rather than anything physical within the pump. Hard to tell though. I just wanted to be sure I’d eliminated the possibilites before I fit the head back on.
