What should static timing be set at?
I use a static timing value of 25° or 30°. 2) Momentarily rev the engine, and watch the timing advance with your timing light. It shouldn’t move. If timing advances or retards, adjust the “Inductive Delay” until the timing maintains itself.
What kind of timing does a VW engine use?
01Over the years Volkswagen used a bewildering array of distributors on its air-cooled engines (check out the oddity above), so a definitive list of timing figures would be very long indeed!
How to set ignition timing on an air cooled VW?
Connect one lead of your test light to the number 1 spark plug wire on the distributor and the other to a solid ground. Start the engine and aim the timing light at the top of the crankshaft pulley. Rotate the distributor body until the appropriate mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the crankcase seam. Tighten down the distributor clamp.
How is the ignition timing of a car determined?
Ignition timing is dependent upon the rest of the ignition system being set up properly. Accurate timing cannot be achieved unless you have sufficient compression, correct valve clearance, correct ignition point gap, correct spark plug gaps and the engine is at normal operating temperature.
What should ignition timing be at 800 rpm?
06Okay, let’s say your engine requires the ignition timing to be set at 10 degrees BTDC at 800-950 rpm with the vacuum hose disconnected and plugged. Simply pull off the vacuum hose from the distributor as shown and plug it to stop air leaking into the carburettor.
