Turns out one of the threaded holes of the electric (sorry, I refuse to call it electronic) choke was stripped, probably causing some vacuum issues due to poor seal. This carburetor fixed everything: after initial adjustments (described on a sheet inside the package) and as soon as the fuel got to the carburetor, my Beetle just idled great.
