What happens if coolant temp is too high?
Hot, pressurized coolant and steam could erupt from the radiator, burning your hands. And never add cold water to an overheated engine; the abrupt temperature change can severely damage the engine. Let the engine cool down. Normally it takes at least a half hour to an hour for a hot engine to cool down.
What is the ideal engine temperature?
between 195 degrees and 220 degrees
Normal Temperature engine temperature gauge Most experts agree that your engine should run between 195 degrees and 220 degrees. In ideal situations, your needle will maintain a posture right in the middle of your gauge.
What should coolant temp be when car is off?
Thermostats normally open at around 80-90°C and the hose will only get hot once the thermostat has opened. Point is that the sensor is reading fine at low temperatures. I checked the ECU readings and when the engine is off for a day the coolant temperature more or less matches the outside temperature, so it definitely did not drift.
Is the engine cooling fan working on a VW Jetta?
If the fan switches off by itself after about 10 minutes, it is working properly. MK4 (1999-2004.5) VWs have an after run feature to cool the engine after shut down if the coolant temperature is too high. 28 people found this helpful. Why is the coolant temp lower than the thermostat?
The fact that the coolant temp is lower than the thermostat set point indicates that the thermostat isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do. Since you have verified that the thermostat fine by testing it in boiling water, the only logical explanation is that coolant flow is (at least partially) bypassing the thermostat.
How can you tell if an engine is running too hot or too cool?
To really know if an engine is, or is not, running too hot, or too cool, is to use an accurate thermometer. How smoothly an emgine runs can INDICATE (but, not prove) that it is (or, not) running at the correct temperature. The normal operating temperature of the coolant in an engine is about 210F to 240F degrees.
