What does it feel like when your rear differential is going out?
Typically, when the gears wear out — or the bearings fail — the differential will start to howl. You’ll hear something that sounds like a deep whistling sound that goes up and down in pitch as you go faster and slower. Sometimes it’ll go away when you step on the gas.
Why does my rear end make noise when I turn?
A bad axle bearing is usually the main reason for noise when cornering. When the noise comes on the right side of the car during a right turn, it usually means that the outside axle bearing is worn. Another cause could be worn out differential-case bearings, and these can also cause noise when turning.
What makes my car’s rear end sway so much?
Sometimes excessive sway from a car’s rear end can be caused by shocks that are too soft or sway bars that are too small. Often, these will be in perfect working condition but are just not heavy-duty enough to effectively control the movement of the vehicle’s rear end.
Why does my car shudder when I turn a corner?
You’re right to be concerned. When your car is in a turn, the front end components and tires are under more stress than when you are driving straight. So if the car isn’t turning smoothly, something is no longer equal to its task. You need to figure out what’s wrong and have it corrected as soon as possible.
What happens when one wheel is spinning slower on a curb?
When one wheel is spinning slower on a curb, the mechanism will keep driving the other wheel without any skidding, binding or jerking. It the differential would not be present, we would have wheels locked together at the same speed in a turn.
How to tell if your car is wobbly around a curve?
Click to expand… Grab a lifted wheel at 3 & 9, wiggle back & forth (on a vertical axis), should be no “play” other than maybe moving the steering wheel a bit. Grab a lifted wheel @ 6 & 12, wiggle back & forth (on a horizontal axis), should be no “play”. If there is play in either direction, look to see where it is.
