Additionally, you can see the hard plastic hose from the PCV nipple has been completely clogged solid. In some cases, this hose can even snap off. We cut this hose in half for demonstration purposes.

Drain the engine oil. Remove the oil pan and check the oil pan and crankcase for deposits. Normally, there should not be any deposits.

Why is my PCV box clogged on my Volvo S60?
What we typically find on these engines is that over time your PCV system can become clogged due to infrequent oil changes and/or low quality engine oil.
Why did Volvo use vacuum in the 60’s?
Beginning in the 60’s engineers began to use the vacuum in the intake system to draw the gasses out of the crankcase. This would create positive crankcase ventilation and re-burn these gasses, so there was less pollution. There were studiesdone at the time that showed 50% of the hydro-carbons in the air were from crankcase ventilation.
