Can you tighten a steering gear box?
There are two adjustments, the worm bearing tension, and the gear mesh adjustment. The bearings should be adjusted to get a few inch-pounds of drag on the worm gear (steering wheel), but you can adjust it by tightening up to remove the play, then go just a smidgen tighter..and tigthen the locknut securely.
Is it bad to tighten your steering box?
There’s nothing wrong with adjusting the slack in the box itself, it adjusts out the wear. As long as your wheel will still self center after making a turn, it’s loose enough. If you tighten it too much, you’ll have to turn the wheel back to center physically.

When do you need a thicker steering box set screw?
