It will cause no harm whatsoever. In fact, most modern car will not allow you to remove the key from the ignition without the car being place in park! The ignition interlock would prevent you from starting the car if it were still in gear.

I forget to put it in “park” before shutting off the engine. It’s a habit learned from driving manual transmissions where you want to park it in first gear. It does absolutely no harm to the engine or transmission.
