How does a PTO work on an automatic transmission?
The PTO is the link between the truck’s transmission and the hydraulic pump, blower, or motor doing the work to complete the job. The PTO converts power from the engine and transmission to an output we can manipulate to drive hydraulic components in various ways to produce a service that generates revenue.
Does the PTO run off the transmission?
The PTO is engaged and disengaged using the main transmission clutch and a remote control mechanism which operates on the PTO itself. Typically, an air valve is used to engage the PTO, but a mechanical linkage, electric or hydraulic mechanism are also options.

How does the Meritor 12 speed auto work?
The transmission clutches itself with an air operated slave cylinder. It’s a two pedal fully automatic operation. I sometimes had to stop and restart the truck to get the Meritor to reset itself after it would lose its mind every so often when using it manually. Oxbow Thanks this.
Where is the PTO on a Meritor freedomline?
The ZF/Meritor Freedomline transmission offers a rear mount PTO output location. You will find this at the right rear of the main transmission housing. There is only this one opening available on this series of transmissions. The transmission elec- tronics must also be programmed for PTO operation.

Can you install a PTO with the engine running?
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL OR SERVICE ANY POWER TAKE- OFF WITH THE TRUCK ENGINE RUNNING. PUT THE IGNITION KEYS IN YOUR POCKET BEFORE GETTING UNDER THE TRUCK. DO NOT ALLOW TRUCK ENGINE TO BE STARTED WHILE WORKERS ARE UNDER THE TRUCK.
