What does low temperature indicator mean?
This light simply tells you that the coolant temperature is low, or cooler than normal. The light should come on and stay light for a couple of seconds after you turn on the engine. The light should come on when the coolant temperature is below normal, and go off when the engine warms up.
What happens if coolant temp low?
Symptoms of coolant temperatures being too low will first be the check engine light. Another symptom is increased fuel consumption. If the coolant is not in the desired range, then the control strategy will change in order to heat the engine up faster while still ensuring normal engine performance.
When does the low coolant light come on on a Prius?
The Classic Prius (well, the new one too) doesn’t have an engine coolant gauge so, similar to the new Yaris, it has a blue coolant light to tell you that the engine is still cold. Tideland has got you covered. That blue light will always come on at startup unless your coolant is above about 70 oC. When winter comes, it will stay on a bit longer.
Why is there no blue light on my Prius?
There is no blue light on the 04-06 Prius. And it is a low coolant temperature light not a low coolant light. They were on GM products in the late 50’s and 60’s instead of a temperature gauge. It is only a problem when it stays on for a long time. (Probably means the the thermostat in the engine is not closing properly.)
